How to convert to lowercase

  1. Paste the heading, the list, or the identifier you want in lowercase.
  2. Read the result. Every letter that has a lowercase mapping should have changed. Digits stay digits.
  3. If the result is prose you will publish, do not stop here. Open sentence case so the starts of sentences and the pronoun I come back.
  4. Copy the result. The length change is usually zero for English, and it is shown anyway because some mappings differ.

A reset, not a finished paragraph

Lowercase is the blunt instrument. “The Draft TITLE” becomes “the draft title”. That is what you want when a form asks for a lowercase slug, when you are comparing strings, or when someone pasted a headline in capitals and you need a clean base. It is the wrong last step for a paragraph, because English readers expect a capital at the start and a capital I. The sentence case converter does that second step and documents its own failures, including abbreviations such as “i.e.”

Title case is a third rule. Title case capitalizes the first letter of each word, including “of” and “the”. Lowercase does none of that. If you lowercase a title and then title-case it, you get mechanical title case. If you only lowercase it, you get a sentence with no capitals at all.Uppercase is the opposite mapping, with the same English locale, and it is the page that explains why ß can change the length.

The locale is English (United States). The letter i does not become the Turkish dotless ı, and I does not follow Turkish uppercase rules, because this site is an English writing tool. Accented Latin letters follow the English mapping. Characters with no case, including digits and most punctuation, pass through.

Duplicates and spaces are still separate jobs

Lowercasing does not remove a repeated line and does not collapse a double space. If two list items differ only by case, Remove duplicate lines can ignore case without forcing the kept line into lowercase. If the problem is spacing, use Remove extra spaces. Doing those jobs on their own pages keeps each rule short enough to read before you destroy the original capitals.

Limitations

  • The pronoun I is lowercased. Restore it with sentence case if the text is prose.
  • Turkish and other languages with special case pairs are out of scope.
  • The converter does not transliterate, translate, or strip accents.
  • There is no stored original. Copy the source elsewhere before you convert if you might want the capitals back.

Questions people ask

Will lowercase fix a heading into a sentence?

No. Lowercase drops every capital, including the one a sentence needs at the start and the pronoun I. It is the right step when you want a uniform token, a search key, or a reset before another transform. For prose you can read, use sentence case afterward.

Does “I” stay capitalized?

No. On this page it becomes “i”. Sentence case is the converter that restores a standalone I. Title case would turn it into “I” as well, and would also capitalize every other word, which is usually not what you want in a paragraph.

What happens to accented letters?

They follow English (United States) lowercase mapping. “É” becomes “é”. The Turkish dotless ı is not specially handled. Do not use this page as a Turkish case converter.

Can I compare two lines after lowercasing?

You can lowercase here and then paste into Remove duplicate lines with “Ignore letter case” off, but that second page already has an ignore-case option. You do not have to destroy the original capitals to dedupe. Lowercase only when you actually want the stored text in lowercase.

Is the text uploaded?

No. Lowercase is applied in the browser. The text is not sent to a server to be converted.
